Model the commercial rules before building checkout.
We define products, prices, billing intervals, trials, discounts, taxes, proration, renewals, cancellation timing, refunds, access rules, and who may change an account. A payment screen is only the front door to a longer customer and accounting lifecycle.
The provider and implementation are selected around countries, payment methods, recurring needs, marketplace structure, risk, existing systems, and ownership. We prefer hosted or tokenized payment components so sensitive card data is handled by the established provider rather than improvised application code.
Treat provider events as an asynchronous system.
Payment providers report completed, failed, disputed, refunded, and subscription events through signed webhooks or APIs. We verify authenticity, store stable provider identifiers, make event handling idempotent, and update application access from confirmed server-side evidence rather than a browser success page alone.
Out-of-order events, retries, delayed settlement, duplicate delivery, and network failure are expected conditions. Logs and administrative views help the team understand why an account has a particular status and recover safely when automation cannot decide.
Reconcile money, access, and customer communication.
The payment provider, application, CRM, accounting process, email system, and support team may each hold part of the story. We define how customer identity and transaction identifiers connect those records and how mismatches become visible.
Testing covers successful and failed checkout, renewals, plan changes, cancellation, refunds, disputes, expired methods, account access, receipts, and analytics. Nobody enjoys discovering the cancellation path in production except, briefly, the customer trying to leave.
