Generating the correct private file path in IMCE

I have a drupal 8 site with private files setup and working.

IMCE is configured on the site and can upload to the private folder.

The problem is, when using imce to link to the uploaded file it uses the absolute path sites/default/files/private/filename – causing a 404 error – rather than the configured private files access path: system/files/filename – which returns the file with correct access permissions.

Is there some way to have IMCE use the correct path when it is used to insert files into a page?

I realize it is not difficult to manually change the path when adding the link but there are a lot of site users who need to add private files and such a solution will likely not go down well.
